How Much Does a Shopify Developer Cost in the UK?

Understand hourly rates, project estimates and monthly support before choosing a Shopify developer.

Editorial illustration for a guide to hiring a Shopify developer and comparing development costs in the UK

If you're looking to hire a Shopify developer, the useful question is how much it will cost to deliver a working, maintainable result. An hourly rate is only one part of that calculation.

A small styling adjustment might take an hour or two. A bespoke product feature can involve several days of development, testing and refinement. A theme rebuild adds design decisions, content migration and launch planning to the work. These are different projects, even when all three are described as “Shopify development”.

This guide explains how to budget, what makes an estimate credible and when a monthly allocation of development time makes sense for a UK business.

How much do Shopify developers charge?

Use the following ranges to start a budgeting conversation. They are illustrative estimates supplied for this guide, not independently verified market-wide averages or a quotation from Simply Bold. The categories overlap, and actual quotes can fall outside them.

Indicative UK hourly budgeting estimates — not verified market averages
Developer typeIndicative hourly rate
Junior freelancer£25–£45
Experienced freelancer£45–£85
Specialist Shopify developer£65–£110
Shopify development agency£75–£150+

We reviewed YunoJuno’s contractor and freelancer rates report as wider UK context. It does not establish these four Shopify-specific hourly bands, so we have kept the figures explicitly as planning estimates. Obtain current quotes against the same brief before setting your budget.

The cheapest rate does not necessarily mean the lowest final bill. A developer familiar with your theme architecture may find the underlying issue quickly, while a less experienced developer spends longer on a workaround. Equally, a straightforward content or CSS task may be perfectly suited to a capable freelancer. Match expertise to the risk and complexity of the work.

What affects Shopify development costs?

Project complexity and the acceptance criteria

Changing the spacing on a collection card is usually contained work. Building a configurable Liquid section also involves settings, blocks, sensible defaults and the theme editor. A product configurator adds variant rules, unavailable combinations, pricing presentation and cart behaviour. Each extra state needs implementation and testing.

Specify what “finished” means. For a product feature, that might include keyboard operation, correct variant IDs in the cart, helpful handling of unavailable options and editing controls for staff. A quote covering only the visual layout is not comparable with one covering the complete buying journey.

The condition of the existing theme

Older themes, undocumented edits and overlapping apps make investigations less predictable. A shared product snippet may be used by several templates; changing it for one product can affect another. Developers need time to map those dependencies before making a safe change.

An initial code review can therefore be useful paid work in its own right. It should identify the relevant customisations, explain technical debt in practical terms and narrow the uncertainty in the estimate. Ask for the findings rather than accepting an unexplained allowance for “complexity”.

Third-party integrations

Connecting inventory or fulfilment systems means agreeing which system owns each field, obtaining authenticated access and mapping identifiers correctly. It also means deciding what happens when requests fail, webhooks arrive twice or updates reach systems in a different order.

Retries, monitoring and reconciliation are part of a reliable integration. A script that succeeds once with a sample record is a prototype, not a complete operational connection. Our guide to custom Shopify development and apps explains where this work belongs.

Testing, review and release

Allow for mobile and desktop layouts, variant selection, add-to-cart behaviour and existing apps. Relevant checks might also cover subscriptions, discounts, unusual product templates and the empty-cart state. Regression testing checks that existing behaviour still works after a change.

Deployment requires care too: previewing an unpublished theme, obtaining approval and recording the version released. A lower estimate that excludes these steps is a different service, not necessarily a better-value version of the same work.

Hourly development or a fixed-price project?

Hourly work suits investigations, bug fixes, maintenance and a backlog that changes as the business learns. Agree priorities, an initial allowance and a point at which the developer should check in. A useful update explains what was found, what remains and whether the estimate has changed.

Fixed-price work is easier to assess when the scope is settled: named templates, agreed designs, specified integrations and clear acceptance criteria. Define who provides content, which devices and states are tested, and how additional requests will be handled.

Neither hourly nor fixed-price development is always cheaper. Fixed pricing normally reflects delivery risk; hourly pricing exposes you to time variation. A short discovery phase can make a larger fixed-price proposal more useful when the starting point is uncertain.

How much does ongoing Shopify support cost?

Simply Bold offers the following monthly development allocations. The same plan data powers our Services page, so the prices below stay consistent with the published plans.

Simply Bold monthly Shopify support plans
PlanMonthly priceHoursEffective rate
Essential£5958£74/hour
Growth£1,09516£68/hour
Scale£2,09532£65/hour

Monthly Shopify support works best when there is an ongoing queue: campaign sections, theme fixes, product-template improvements and integration maintenance. Prioritising those together makes the allocation easier to use productively than treating every request as an isolated emergency.

For a store needing only occasional help, commissioning individual tasks may be more appropriate. Choose a plan around the work you actually expect, and confirm the working arrangements before starting. Read what Shopify maintenance should include for a practical way to assess that backlog.

What should you ask before hiring a Shopify developer?

  • How will the change fit the theme’s Liquid, JSON templates, sections and snippets?
  • Can staff edit the relevant content through the theme editor after delivery?
  • What JavaScript or API work is involved, and where will any credentials be stored?
  • Which customer journeys and devices are included in testing?
  • How will changes be previewed, approved, deployed and rolled back if necessary?
  • Who owns the code, where is it stored and what documentation will be provided?
  • How are estimates, progress updates and additional scope communicated?
  • What ongoing support will the feature require, and who will maintain external services?

Ask for an explanation you can use to make a decision. “We will test the product selector with unavailable variants and confirm the selected item reaches the cart” is more useful than an unexplained promise of quality assurance. For examples of the technical areas involved, see our Shopify development services.

When is a specialist Shopify developer worth it?

Specialist knowledge is particularly valuable when a change touches business-critical behaviour, several systems or a heavily customised theme. Understanding Shopify’s extension points can prevent an expensive design from depending on functionality the store cannot support.

It does not follow that every small task needs a specialist agency. A clear, low-risk adjustment to an otherwise standard theme can be modest work. The important distinction is whether the developer understands the consequences of the change and can leave it maintainable.

Compare proposals on scope, assumptions, testing and ownership before comparing the final number. A good Shopify developer should solve today’s requirement without making tomorrow’s development unnecessarily difficult.
